Established in 2016, Sono Motors is a German start-up company that has the goal of manufacturing electric cars that have sharable technology. As they stated, “Reinventing mobility, free from fossil-fuels.
Sono Motors developed a forward-looking electric car, the Sion, that charges itself with energy harvested from the sun.
The company is claiming that the vehicle is powered by 100% Renewable Energy.
The Sion is a purely electrically driven car, which can be charged by a Type2- / CCS- charging interface, as well as by its own photovoltaic modules integrated into the car’s outer skin.
The roof, bonnet and large parts of the outer shell of the body are equipped with highly efficient monocrystalline silicon cells (especially efficient in diffuse light, aiming to load 100% of their potential capacity at angles of incidence down to 70°) which are protected by a layer of polycarbonate.
The drive will be a three-phase asynchronous motor with a power of 120 kilowatts (161 hp). The motor voltage is 400 V. With the rear wheel drive, a top speed of 87 miles per hour should be possible.
The Sion is to have a range of 200 miles, which corresponds to approximately 160 miles under realistic driving conditions.
The vehicle has a bidirectional charging technology, meaning that Sion can be us as mobile energy storage for use while camping, at construction sites and at home.
With an onboard-charger, the Sion will be able to share its power to recharge other electric vehicles.
Sono Motors encourages ride sharing, car sharing and power sharing via an all in-one app.
The Sion is keyless, you will need a smart phone start and secure the vehicle.
Sono predicted a September 2021 production start, with customer deliveries targeted for early 2022.
